What is the average cost or price to hire a wedding photographer in Dublin and Ireland?

For 2021, according to OneFabDay.com, about the cost of a wedding – couples in Ireland will spend an average of between €2,000 and €4,000 on wedding photography. Most (nearly 70%) will spend between €2,000 and €4,000; others might find a friend with a camera or an uncle. Of course, that’s just average and doesn’t tell the whole story. Wedding photography prices can vary based on many factors. In general, more experienced photographers have higher pricing…on the other side, spending more money might not always mean getting better photos.

A common rule of thumb is to expect to spend 10-15% of your total budget on photography. If photography is more important, you may spend more, or vice-versa.

In the Irish market, there are three distinct “Tiers” of pricing with photographers that can start at €1,000 or less and go as high as €6,000 or more. In the lowest tier (by price), you’ll find “hobby” photographers and high-volume studios. You’ll find photographers who serve exclusive events and clients at the most expensive end. In the middle (where I consider myself to be), you’ll find the boutiques that emphasize a blend of great customer service, overall value and the best photography at any price point.

What is included in wedding photography packages?
What’s covered in a wedding photographer’s prices?

When researching wedding photographers, carefully read the information about their pricing and packages—these tend to differ widely from photographer to photographer and can greatly affect wedding photography pricing. A few items and services to look for include:

  • Time: Of planning, scheduling, and photographs.
  • Travel: Travel time and cost. I do not charge for travel within Ireland, but some photographers do. Just be aware of that.
  • Second Shooters: If you would like to add a Second Photographer – it is a separate cost added.
  • Editing: Much of my time will be spent editing and retouching your wedding photos to ensure they look amazing.
  • Images: Your actual images. Digital files can be provided to you in various ways, including in an online gallery and/or via a USB drive.
  • Print release: Many wedding photography packages include a “print release,” meaning you can use the photos for your personal use. However, be aware that you will likely not have a full “copyright release,” so you don’t own the photos and can’t sell them, and your photographer can use your photos for marketing purposes.
  • Prints: Some photographers include photo prints (or a print credit—money you can put toward purchasing prints) in their wedding photography rates. While you don’t have to purchase your prints through your photographer, they’ll likely come out better if you do.
  • Albums: Your photographer may offer a wedding album as part of the package. You can choose whether you’d like to design and purchase your album through your photographer or do it through another service. Again – I personally create a story within your wedding album.
  • Additional shoots: Sometimes I include an engagement shoot in your package – but It also can be done separately (62 per cent of couples do a pre-wedding engagement shoot).
  • Other, less obvious parts of a wedding photographer’s business may be included in their package pricing, which includes equipment, employees, business expenses, marketing, liability insurance, and more.

Extras, Albums?

Sometimes the cost of a package can be higher if a wedding album is included. Many photographers keep them as a separate optional extra to purchase as it involves designing the album in a meaningful way.

This is a separate workflow on its own.

It is always easier and stress-free and always financially better to get an album reserved at the time of booking a photographer, and maybe albums for your parents. This will help reduce the time for designing and also help you manage the budget – if you know you will be buying an album – why not reserve one now?

Conclusion, Summary

  • I truly believe that no “average cost” is strong enough to believe on its own.
  • You have to do the research yourself and see if you like the photographer’s work and if you trust him/her.
  • Remember that only your memories and photos will stay with you after your wedding – nothing else.
  • So please make YOUR decision and avoid disappointment as it is too late after the wedding!
